S.ta Maria da Feira

Images which reflects on the ancient walls of a castle
arise in the darkness of the night.
The shadow conquer the light
but there are sounds melted into the night
which lighten the soul
and move the borders of the thought.

When the night starts, the silences return and, among the trees, absolute shadows born, discovering new forces sustaining the bushes near the walls of the castle. Time can be felt, as well as what is happening in this instant of contemplation and what has already happened; the present and the past unified by the same glance. The future, this is what can't be perceived from the wide walls of the fortress; neither a mirage of what will happen. The doubts of the present are delayed, uncertainties which rapidly change into the certainty of what will not happen. But something resists, something tries to resist, something which believes that is possible to break the untamed barrier between the past and the future, to survive in time like the walls of a castle.
Music survives in time, at least the one which make us feel something, which narrates us a story, which narrates life as a dream, like a neverending flows of emotions, hopes and wills. Only this one transposes time, only this one can be played in a castle, in a castle like the one of Santa Maria da Feira. The music of Madredeus perfectly fit into a scenery like the one of this castle which I'm talking about; this music, like the castle, survives the time.
"Recital", the concert which Madredeus presented in the castle of Santa Maria da Feira in a limpid night of September between ancient walls and under a starry sky, is well the proof of that. Old songs of the group, rearranged after the exit of the accordion (Gabriel Gomes) and of the cello (Francisco Ribeiro) and the joining of the acoustic bass (Fernando Júdice) fit prfectly in the most recent repertoire. But this renovation is also from Teresa Salgueiro who, in a sublime way, gave to these songs a new interpretation, giving to them a new life. "Ajuda" is maybe the best example of this renovation, the best and the clearest one, having obtained a new brilliance with the new arrangment and with the new interpretation of Teresa.
It is difficult to describe the entirety of this "Recital" in the castle of Santa Maria da Feira. Emotion, feeling, silences transformed into sounds, sadness, joy, a mixture of feelings in the night, into a castle at the service of music.

A sombra invade a luz
mas há sons soltos na noite
que iluminam a alma
e transpõem as fronteiras do pensamento.

When I saw the castle on top of the hill I knew it at to be.. Here I was, so near I could not stay outside now, we had to find a way.. The car climbed the hill ,the castle grew bigger and bigger, we saw people, so many people.. Sergio hesitated, should we ask? Yes off course, we should, we should! And all of a sudden things went so quick. Like someone twisted a magic stick, like glitters and lighting blinded us for a moment, like landing on our feet in another world, with in our hand: two tickets for Madredeus..
We laughed like children being unexpectedly free, we almost skipped our way down to the centre of that fairy-castle. Surrounded by those ancient walls we sat and waited.. I looked around at all those people being so lucky to be there, and I looked at Sergio who couldn't wait till the music would start. And I looked above to the dark blue sky and the billion stars.. and I thought: this must be a fairy-tale. This is a fairy-tale.
And there the princess came, in her beautiful black dress accompanied by her musicians. And she spoke about war, outside of the castle, far away, but so near in our hearts. Because in fairy-tales you always have the good and the bad.. And then we were silent, we all stood there in the silent night, it was a sad sad song to start with. But an impressive one....
And then the music began and lifted up our sad hearts, and brought smiles in a minute, for a brief moment tears welt up, tears that come just because of beauty... And the princess sang .She sang endlessly. And the musicians played there heavenly music. And the princess danced. And the princess smiled. Eternity was there, in that castle on the hill, under those billion lights...
And it still sings on , I am still dreaming.. I don't know whether it was for real or not, whether it was this world or another, whether I was awake or asleep. What I feel is real. And what I remember. And what is still playing and singing in my soul.
