A Source of Many Fantasies
Everything in life is felt and thought, sustain the singer Teresa Salgueiro to La Jornada
Pablo Espinosa
Madredeus in interview:
"Everything in life is thought and felt", say Teresa Salgueiro with her little
baby, Inés, six month old, in her arms.
"Our music is deeply social because in the concert hall we create a living poem
and the development of many human meanings", says Pedro Ayres Magalhães,
both pillars of the portuguese group that returns to Mexico.
Offer every time a living poem
- How is like the new music of Madredeus, after O Paraíso?
- The musicians, answer Teresa - composed new songs that we had not time to
record, but that we will already play in public. We have not new music to present
but we have new arrangements for old songs that we want to present here in Mexico.
- How are like the new songs in respect of the changes of the formations?
- They contain the perspective of much more work, of visits to different places
with the same singing of new ideas, words that meet the music that made them
more interesting.
- Inside poetical situations, intimate ambiances and atmospheres, where is located
the social aspect of the music of Madredeus?
- We are interested in the social, that we approach in dialogues as well as
part of our songs. The poetry of Madredeus comments the entire life and this
includes, obviously ,the social aspect, but at the same level than feelings,
images, and the observation of nature. This because everything in life is thought
and felt.
- Does the music of Madredeus continue to turn around your voice?
- Yes, and at the same time this music continues to use my voice as an instrument.
We have different ways to do music but these two are the fundamentals.
- Does this instrumental dialogue between you and the rest have a preferred
interlocutor with the guitars?
- They are rich in the rhythm and in the melody, but in reality the dialogue
is with everybody. The sounds that Carlos Maria (with the keyboards) produces
are as well really important. It is a continuous dialogue among all the members
and it is not susceptible of separations.
- What will be the programme that we will listen in these mexican concerts?
- It is a concert specially prepared for Mexico in which we included some pieces
of every album we have recorded. It is different from the one we presented some
months ago in which we played only our latest release, O Paraíso.
Pedro Ayres Magalhães,
composer of Madredeus, return to the dialogue about the social components of
the group.
"What is really socially important in music is that it is built in a creative
and rigorous way and that the popular authors, in whose tradition I subscribe
myself, have always the opportunity to surprise with new ideas, this is an important
social role and I devote myself to that. The fact that the problems of our times
are not present in an obvious way in our music doesn't mean that they are not
among my preoccupations. The proof can be encountered in a song of the album
O Espírito da Paz that is called Ajuda, because it summarize my entire
thought about what I dream can be the solutions: I mean, life is really short
and in its duration and in the story of our small humanity we have to consider
a more generous spirit and consider this virtue, generosity, as a universal
disposition that have to be cultivated, like goodness.
"Our music - continues Pedro Ayres - is deeply social. When we invite people
to listen in a concert hall we create a living poem, that would be in every
case completely contrary of letting reality link brutally with music. The presence
of the musicians who play an own repertoire, who comes from Lisbon and arrives
to Mexico where some people doesn't even know where Lisbon is, is, in itself,
a social example of hope, of creativity, of goodness, of international collaboration.
There are many things that we put inside a Madredeus concert. In the execution
of our repertoire we create the greatest possible number of fantasies.
"For example, right now that we are writing new songs I watch to what already
is the history of Madredeus: twelve years is a lot of time. I see how, in the
first years, our songs were made a bit for our country, focusing conditions
of our patrimony and ambitions of all our history in a metaphoric and evocative
way, a quite discreet thing, really efficient to create this relation that we
have with the portuguese culture."
A language full of meanings
"Later, when the group started voyaging,
we wrote would would have been a music and a text that wanted to offer a meaning
to our traveling activity. In this way O Espírito da Paz born as the
most important message of the group, a message that create a conscience about
the importance to work with our most primitive and instinctive impulses wills
"After that we made Ainda, this album that portray this city and that would
have been rehandled, album and city, by Wim Wenders. The lyrics of the most
recent album, O Paraíso, are the history of the group, the voyages, the
songs of the beginning, the ones of O Espírito da Paz, the ambition to
create a repertoire that is intelligible for every public that we already knew
through our music. Now I feel and I think that we are in front of the most personal
path of Madredeus, with many different musical shapes, much more various and
the explanation of the subject in the lyrics of our songs, Teresa who carries
that word, who sing the word and who contain thoughts that do not belong only
to her, but it is much more a joined creation, that we can define as a work
of verbal modelling that adequates to her figure and to her character in concert.
"I think and I feel that all the stimulation that we received from the great
community that make up our audience in so many countries conduct us to the creation
of a language full of meanings and the orientation, so, is though more personal
than before, and not only inspired in a national expression as the portuguese
one, that eventually we conserved, but every time nearer to the common place
and, in exchange, nearer to the matters that are interesting to all the publics.
"Madredeus is, so, in the most personal moment of his history. The attention
of the people allow us to be much more personal and to escape from the generality
and to be identified not anymore only as symbols of the culture of a country,
but also, finally, as artists that show their individuality. And this convert
our activity in something of great social deepness" concludes Pedro Ayres.

sentido a nuestra actividad viajera.
social", concluye Pedro Ayres.
