This Friday the Portuguese group Madredeus will appear in Guadalajara, " a hymn to the life, a hope song " as defined it for El Informador, in interview via telephone, its vocalist Teresa Salgueiro, who has promised a trip by the songs of all his albums

The days approach and Madredeus continues its passage by Mexico, after fulfilling some dates in the capital. This Portuguese ensemble visits the Republic as part of an extensive tour around the world. With a good diction, a Spanish accent and with the company of the stammerings of his small daughter of six months, Teresa Salgueiro commented that the concerts in Mexico of the last weekend were an experience full of strength. "Our history with Mexico is of passion. People deal to us with much affection and with an enormous joy " explained the vocalist. Tired of making a work like "O Porto", where the songs were mainly from "O Paraíso", in these concerts, Madredeus makes a route in its discography, and that's the reason why an intense bond settles with their admirers. Salgueiro commented that one of the things that she likes more of those who have seen them in Mexico is that " they understand music which we do, they want it, and then, we have always felt well. Mexico is a lover of music ".

- Teresa what Madredeus is going to find who will attend to your shows?

The shows of the group are not very spectacular, they are recitals of music, a trip by all the discs that we have done until now, a trip by the songs which we have continued to play, from "O Paraíso" and from the first albums, from "Ainda" and "O Espírito da Paz", but the concerts of Madredeus are not spectacular.

First of all the responsibility with music

And while Teresa speaks with a serenity that can cause envy, without hiding some difficulties to understand the spanish language, she does not forget to speak in plural, including all the group of musicians of the ensemble.
She seems to ignore that she is for many the magnetic center, the core of Madredeus.
When the group sits on the scene it does that with simplicity, with games of tenuous lights, with a predominance of the blue ones and the members normally dress ceremoniously in black to make of their music the central point of attention. It seems that Madredeus touches as if nobody knew them, but its vocalist is conscious that the group has reached a level in which there is a great responsibility in front of an audience who knows and waits great things from them.

" The responsibility is first with music, that is our great responsibility, because it is what we want to continue doing: to create original music in Portuguese, which we have done until now and doing it well, having the capacity to create in an inventive way, with the instruments and our style. The responsibility with people is great, but the affection that we obtain from the public gives much force to us, it is what has been making us travel for many years until now ", assures Teresa Salgueiro. Some have described the experience to listen to Madredeus as an encounter with the spirit, as a trip to the corners of the soul, but the singer expresses that it is rather an answer to the energy that they receive from their followers.
"(We asked ourselves) ' what music we are going to do for this people who have received us so well ', we have that will of not wanting to repeat us ".

The experimental character

- With the trips by the world, have you ever thought about doing a more flexible sound, integrating some sounds that you have encountered in so many different countries?

We have the will to continue doing this music sung in Portuguese, to always recreate it. Our experimental character has always been very strong. I know that in future there will be new things, I do not know also because it is quite early to talk about the new album.
While Teresa Salgueiro speaks, can be listened the stammerings of her daughter, who is part of the caravan that accompanies Madredeus, in such a way that the list of the necessities of the group asks for a cradle, a bathtub and diverse accessories for the good state of the child.
Perhaps to that feeling of maternity corresponds the captivating interpretation of the vocalist, undoubtedly the soul of the group and that has taken the first stage of the group when it was invited to participate, with only 17 years and coming from an experimental band of rock.

A music that travels, a music of the heart

But now, the recognition obtained by Madredeus as a result of the film "Lisbon Story" of Wim Wenders and their Ainda album, has taken its followers and the critics to define its work in diverse forms, no one guessed at the one hundred percent, because its music goes beyond the fado, the flamenco, the mixed European tradition with the African, of celtic music or the Renaissance and classic sounds.

- Teresa, many labels have been put and many different kind of music have been coupled with yours. Can you give us a definition to talk about Madredeus?

It is a music that travels, because the musicians set out to have this life of travellers and that is a very important part for our music, for that reason it maintains a very important dynamics. Madredeus for me is... its song is like a hymn to life. We can talk about whatever we want but for me Madredeus is much, a hope song, of being able to speak of all the feelings we've felt, of all the things we've seen by traveling and being able to transmit it to the others. It is a music of the heart.

- Is the success a weight or a tool for the group?

No, not weight, first of all because we are doing the music that we like and, in addition to that, we have an high level of exigency with ourself. In any case, our success has been to be able to take the life of musicians, to travel of this form and doing live concerts, that is the thing we more like to do. (In) each concert everything begins again, in a certain manner, because we are there all the nights to do the best thing we can.
That success exists because they invite us to play, but the success must be always constructed, is not something static.
Now Madredeus is in the middle of an extensive tour by diverse countries of the world that will continue after Mexico by France, Germany, Poland, Portugal and Brazil, for that reason do not think now about no record production, which will be hoping " to try to record it when it is possible ".
So far, the night of this Friday 16 of April, the Audience Pedro Arrupe of the Iteso will shelter the music of Madredeus and mainly the voice of Teresa Salgueiro, which somebody has defined like a voice of angel in the middle of an intimate atmosphere that all moves.

Este viernes se presentará en Guadalajara la agrupación portuguesa Madredeus, "un himno a la vida, un canto de esperanza" como lo definió para EL INFORMADOR, en entrevista vía telefónica, su vocalista Teresa Salgueiro y quien ha prometido un viaje por las canciones de todos sus discos

Los días se acercan y Madredeus continúa su trayecto por México, después de cumplir con algunas fechas en la capital. Este ensamble portugués visita la República como parte de una extensa gira alrededor del mundo.
Con una buena dicción, un acento español y con la compañía de los balbuceos de su pequeña hija de seis meses, Teresa Salgueiro comentó que los conciertos en México del fin de semana pasado fueron una experiencia llena de fuerza.
"Nuestra historia con México es de pasión. La gente nos trata con mucho cariño y una alegría enorme" explicó la vocalista.
Lejos de hacer un trabajo cercano a Oporto, donde predominaban los temas de su álbum O Paraíso, en estas presentaciones, Madredeus realiza un recorrido por su discografía, por lo que se establece un vínculo intenso con sus seguidores.
Salgueiro comentó que una de las cosas que más le gusta de quienes los han visto en México es que "entienden la música que hacemos, la quieren mucho, entonces, siempre nos sentimos bien. México es un amante de la música".

- Teresa ¿con qué Madredeus se van a encontrar quienes asistan a la presentación de este viernes?

Las presentaciones del grupo no son muy espectaculares, son recitales de música, haciendo un viaje por todos los discos que hemos hecho hasta ahora, un viaje por las canciones que seguimos tocando, de O Paraíso y los primeros discos, de Ainda y O Espiritu da Paz, pero los conciertos de Madredeus no son nada espectaculares.

Primero la responsabilidad con la música

Y mientras Teresa habla con una serenidad que puede provocar la envidia, sin nada que ocultar y por momentos con algunas dificultades para entender el español, no deja de hablar en plural, incluyendo al grupo de ejecutantes que integran este ensamble.
Parece ignorar que para muchos es el centro magnético, el alma de Madredeus.
Cuando el grupo se para en el escenario lo hace con sencillez, con juegos de luces tenues, predominan los azules y normalmente los integrantes visten ceremoniosamente de negro para hacer de su música el punto central de atención.
Parece que Madredeus toca como si nadie los conociera, pero su vocalista está consciente de que el grupo ha alcanzado un nivel en el que hay una gran responsabilidad ante una audiencia que los conoce y espera grandes cosas de ellos.
"La responsabilidad es primero con la música, esa es nuestra gran responsabilidad, porque es lo que queremos seguir haciendo: crear música original en portugués, lo que hemos hecho hasta ahora y hacerlo bien, teniendo la capacidad de crear de una manera inventiva, con los instrumentos y nuestro estilo. La responsabilidad con la gente es grande, pero el cariño que obtenemos del público nos da mucha fuerza, es lo que nos hace viajar tanto desde hace muchos años", asegura Teresa Salgueiro.
Algunos han calificado la experiencia de escuchar a Madredeus como un encuentro con el espíritu, como un viaje a los rincones del alma, pero la cantante expresa que es más bien una respuesta de la energía que reciben de sus seguidores. "(Nos preguntamos) '¿qué música vamos a hacer para esta gente que nos ha recibido tan bien?', tenemos esa voluntad de no querer repetirnos".

El carácter experimental

-Con los viajes por el mundo ¿han pensado hacer más flexible su sonido, integrando quizá algunos sonidos que se han encontrado a su paso por distintos países?

Tenemos la voluntad de seguir haciendo esta música cantada en portugués, de recrearlo siempre. Nuestro carácter experimental siempre ha sido muy fuerte. Sé que en un futuro habrá cosas nuevas, no sé cuales, porque aún es muy temprano para hablar de un disco nuevo.

Mientras Teresa Salgueiro habla, vuelven a escucharse los balbuceos de su hija, quien es parte de la caravana que acompaña a Madredeus, de tal forma que en la lista de necesidades del grupo se solicita una cuna, una tina y diversos accesorios para el buen estado de la pequeña.
Quizá a ese sentimiento de maternidad responda la cautivante interpretación de la vocalista, indudable alma del grupo y que ha dejado atrás esa primera etapa del grupo cuando fue invitada a participar, con tan sólo 17 años y proveniente de una banda experimental de rock.

Una música que viaja, del corazón

Pero ahora, el reconocimiento obtenido por Madredeus a raíz de la cinta Historia de Lisboa de WimWenders y su álbum Ainda, ha llevado a sus seguidores y la crítica ha definir su trabajo de diversas formas, ninguna acertada al cien por ciento, porque su música va más allá del fado, del flamenco, la tradición europea mezclada con lo africano, de la música celta o de los sonidos renacentistas y clásicos.

- Teresa, se le han puesto muchas etiquetas y se le atribuyen diversos géneros a su música ¿usted tiene una definición para hablar de Madredeus?

Es una música que viaja, porque los músicos se proponen a tener esta vida de viajeros y esa es una parte muy importante para nuestra música, por eso mantiene una dinámica muy importante.
Madredeus para mí es... su canto es como un himno a la vida. Se puede hablar de lo que queramos pero para mí Madredeus es mucho, un canto de esperanza, de poder hablar de todo lo que se siente, de todo lo que se ve cuando se está viajando y transmitiéndolo a los demás. Es una música del corazón.

- ¿El éxito le pesa al grupo o se vuelve una herramienta?

No, no pesa, porque vamos haciendo la música que nos gusta a nosotros y eso es lo primero, además de que tenemos un alto nivel de exigencia con nosotros mismos. De todas formas, nuestro éxito ha sido poder llevar la vida de músicos, de viajar de esta forma y poder haciendo conciertos en vivo, que es lo que más nos gusta.
(En) cada concierto todo empieza de nuevo, de cierta forma, porque ahí estamos todas las noches para hacer lo mejor que podemos. Ese éxito existe porque nos invitan a tocar, pero el éxito tiene que ser construido siempre, no es algo estático.

Ahora Madredeus está en medio de una extensa gira por diversos países del mundo que continuará después de México por Francia, Alemania, Polonia, Portugal y Brasil, por ello no piensan ahora en ninguna producción discográfica, la cual estará esperando "para intentar grabarlo cuando sea posible".
Por lo pronto, la noche de este viernes 16 de abril, el Auditorio Pedro Arrupe del Iteso cobijará la música de Madredeus y sobre todo la voz de Teresa Salgueiro, a quien algunos han calificado como una voz de ángel en medio de un ambiente íntimo que todo lo mueve.
