The Lisbon of Madredeus
Lisbon was once
called the "white city" or also described as a ship which enters the Atlantic
ocean, but now "she" is inevitably become the city of Madredeus, particularly
for the people like me that learned to discover "her" through the lyrics of
their songs.
Who watch at it with the imagination of Pedro and the voice of Teresa feels
in every street, every ascent, every lane, their music, which is born to sing
those streets, until transforming them in something different as only the passion
of a loving man can do.
Emotioned as at the first appointment, I have wandered through Lisbon searching
for the places that I started to love through the music, sometimes disappointed,
sometimes getting even more sad because of the consciousness that Lisbon is
not my city.
The places of Madredeus mingle with those of Lisbon Story: in every steps that
crosses Lisbon, the image of Teresa who greets Rudiger Vogler and descend the
Escada da Achada at the end of the film, lives again, or we remain in contemplation
in the palace near to Castelo de São Jorge whose key was owned by Teresa
(which is also the palace inhabited by Marcello Mastroianni in "Sostiene Pereira").
The Iberian Theater is not far from there, and it is beautiful to go there with
friends to share photos, as Teresa, Pedro, Rodrigo, Gabriel and Francisco, in
a rainy afternoon of twelve years ago... (the photos are contained in the first
cd, "Os Dias da Madredeus", that take its name from a near church, where is
hosted the national museum of the azulejos)
Following the blue line of the Underground in the direction of the stadium da
Luz, we can arrive to the Pomar das Laranjeiras, where Teresa in "Existir" swear
eternal love and the next stop is Alto dos Moinhos, with its great isolated
houses that remember that sad music in "Os Moinhos" in "O Espírito da
Paz": once upon a time the windmills (moinhos) were there.
Another important stop is the one of Avenida da Roma on the green line: Rodrigo
and Pedro grew up, and Teresa sustained there her first audition in those great
palaces of the Sixties. Teresa was seventeen at those times, and with her friends
from Amadora, a city near Lisbon, she took the train to go to the Rossio's Station,
to go then to the Bairro Alto, one of the quarters with the strongest night
activity.
In the old bar Gingão, seeing her singing, Gabriel Gomes proposed her
to join the group, and everything started...
Passes the time and the Tejo flows, since millennia. Pedro wrote some of his
most beautiful thoughts about two of the most ancient quarters of Lisbon, Alfama
e Mouraria, beside living in Mouraria for some time.
The videoclip of Alfama was shot on an idea of Wim Wenders on one of the typical
trams of Lisbon, which goes from Largo da Graça to Largo do Carmo.
Finally, there is an exact point where all the stories of Lisbon end: the Cais
das Colunas, which has been shot recently in the videoclip "La Cura" of Franco
Battiato, which is symbolic start and arrival and was also, in the words of
Fernando Pessoa, a "solitude of stone".
The monumental Praça do Comércio fade sweetly to the Tejo through
that dock (cais) of steps (colunas): here Pedro talked for the first time about
the foundation of União Lisboa, the agency which deals with the activity
of Madredeus, to his friend Fernando Pêra, and it is there that I think
he is risking to lose his life, drowning the isolated shadow of "A Sombra",
the first song which took life from the voice of Teresa.
Mastroianni in Sostiene Pereira).
entrare nel gruppo, e così tutto cominciò&8230;
do Carmo.
