The most representative group of new Portuguese music, with a work that reviews the cultural traditions of Portugal, the Madredeus, in what can seem a paradox, has a universalistic vocation. But, for the guitarist and main composer of the group, Pedro Ayres Magalhães, this is also one of the features strongest of its people and country
"As the Israelis, the Portuguese had started, in the end of century XIV, their great exodus, that still have not finished" says, in interview by telephone, from Lisbon, Ayres. "We are the sailors of this end of century, only that our boats are the concerts."
The group, formed by Teresa Salgueiro (voice), Pedro Ayres and José Peixoto (violões), Carlos Maria Trindade (synthesizers) and Fernando Júdice (acoustic bass), lands in Brazil in the next week, inside of the series " Meeting with Portugal ". The requests for this concert of day 30 of April, in the Municipal Theater of Niterói, was so great that the managers had set an extra show, open to the public, in the day 1º of May, on Icaraí Beach.
"It is always a pleasure to play in Brazil, it has been stimulating since the first time - says Ayres - I still remember the respect of the public of Salvador, in our first concert, when our music was little known."
In this fourth visit to Brazil, the Madredeus brings the repertoire of the new CD, " O Paraíso" (EMI), and six more unknown songs. Ayres refuses the critic that the formula of the group is going to deplete.
"We have an obligation to continue a style, but also we introduce new textures to the work" says the composer.
Today, it has magnified not only the success of the group, but also the interest for the new music that comes of Portugal grew, represented by singers like Dulce Pontes, Maria João and Mísia. This rediscovery has occurred in the entire world and it is also extended to the literature of Jose Saramago or to the cinema of Manoel Oliveira. Ayres has an explanation for this cultural renaissance.
"Portugal entered, in the two last decades, a process of great freedom, after a long period of closure and, in the last years, we can see the bloom of this process all."
Ayres still counts that, in the case of the Madredeus, the group decided to invest in external markets and, today, makes an average of 120 concerts per year. He says that, with exception of the english world, they have regularly showed in the Mediterranean countries, in Japan and South America. Beyond the quality its work, associations as the one that happened with the german director Wim Wenders has helped in the broadcasting of the music of the Madredeus

Grupo mais representativo da nova música portuguesa, com um trabalho que revira as tradições culturais lusitanas, o Madredeus, no que pode parecer um paradoxo, tem uma vocação universalista. Mas, para o violonista e principal compositor do conjunto, Pedro Ayres Magalhães, esta também é uma das características mais fortes de seu povo e país.
- Como os israelitas, os portugueses começaram, no fim do século XIV, a sua grande diáspora, que ainda não acabou - diz, em entrevista por telefone, de Lisboa, Ayres. - Somos os navegadores deste fim de século, só que nossos barcos são os concertos.
O grupo, formado por Teresa Salgueiro (voz), Pedro Ayres e José Peixoto (violões), Carlos Maria Trindade (sintetizadores) e Fernando Júdice (contrabaixo), desembarca no Brasil na próxima semana, dentro da série "Encontro com Portugal". A procura pelo concerto do dia 30 de abril, no Teatro Municipal de Niterói, foi tanta que os organizadores agendaram um show extra, aberto ao público, no dia 1º de maio, na Praia de Icaraí.
- É sempre um prazer tocar no Brasil, tem sido estimulante desde a primeira vez - diz Ayres. - Ainda lembro do respeito do público de Salvador, no nosso primeiro concerto, quando nossa música era pouco conhecida.
Nesta quarta visita ao Brasil, o Madredeus traz o repertório do novo CD, "O paraíso" (EMI), e mais seis canções inéditas. Ayres refuta a crítica de que a fórmula do grupo estaria se esgotando.
- Temos obrigação de continuar um estilo, mas também introduzimos novas texturas ao trabalho - diz o compositor.
Hoje, não só aumentou o público do grupo, como também cresceu o interesse pela nova música que vem de Portugal, representada por cantoras como Dulce Pontes, Maria João e Mísia. Essa redescoberta tem ocorrido no mundo todo e também se estende à literatura de um José Saramago ou ao cinema de um Manoel de Oliveira. Ayres tem uma explicação para esse renascimento cultural.
- Portugal entrou, nas duas últimas décadas, num processo de grande liberdade, depois de um longo período de obscurantismo - diz o músico. - E, nos últimos anos, estamos podendo ver o florescimento desse processo todo.
Ayres conta ainda que, no caso do Madredeus, o grupo resolveu investir nos mercados externos e, hoje, faz uma média de 120 concertos por ano. Ele diz que, com exceção do mundo anglo-saxônico, tem se apresentado regularmente nos países mediterrâneos, no Japão e na América do Sul. Além da qualidade de seu trabalho, associações como a que aconteceu com o cineasta alemão Wim Wenders têm ajudado na difusão da música do Madredeus.
- Wenders foi muito importante e, ao utilizar nossa música na trilha de seu filme ("O céu de Lisboa"), deu maior prestígio ao nosso trabalho - diz Ayres.Antonio Carlos Miguel
