To the Light of Morning

Morning early. In the clear hours of the day when silence still did not wake up. The right time for Jose Peixoto to touch the consequences of this light in the strings of his guitar. It is what he says to us, and what the reflection says to him in the new album "O Que me Diz o Espelho de Água" (what says to me the water mirror). A " puzzle " of crystals recorded in a church.

It rained during all our talk with Jose Peixoto, in the afternoon, in the bar of the Cultural Center of Belém, by the way of the release of his new album, " O Que me Diz o Espelho de Água ". It seemed adequate, referring to the liquid element cited in the title. An afternoon which was darken than the music of the guitarist of the Madredeus that did not hinder the words, as the liner notes, to run in a certain direction. O Que me Diz o Espelho de Água " is the third solo album of Jose Peixoto, guitarist of the Madredeus, after "As Vozes dos Passos " and "A Vida de um Dia ".
And what does the water mirror says to Jose Peixoto? "It says a lot with its silence. It speaks to me of the calmness, the illusion of the fixed time, the liquid solidity, the infinite space contained in its reflections and also of the fragility and the constant seek of rest that exists in the mystery of its soul. It also seduces me for the certainty of its hidden life", answers the musician.

Infact, we also saw more or less the same thing. Therefore, nothing more natural than talking with Jose Peixoto, collating it with the consequences of his proper work. When seeing himself in the mirror of the soul, Jose Peixoto composes on the basis of the mere intuition. " Without any sketch nor any predetermined idea." "It is like assembling a ' puzzle ' ", says. " There was a period in which we have a global idea of the shape of the music, even if we do not have all the pieces of it, it is necessary to incase them, to find certain notes. ". The "puzzle" of "O Que me Diz o Espelho de Água " has ten parts, some of them with the participation of the bassist Mário Franco and the percussionist Rui Júnior.

"O Que me Diz o Espelho de Água " was recorded in the days 10 and 11 of November of the passed year in the Church of Cartuxa in Caxias, " during the day, with very good weather". "It is a place that provides me a certain acoustic comfort and an meditation atmosphere", says the musician, who was forced to face some problems during the recording sessions. " There were interruptions motivated by exterior noises" It must have been terrible, we presume, if this happened in a much inspired take with everything else going on perfectly. This is what happened during the recording of A memória contempla o reflexo". "The church is near a college and during an afternoon there was an excursion with young children. There was a light truck with the engine working right in front of the church, with the children making all the noise which is normal in such situations. We were subject to every noise, every murmur. The worst was that the take was good up to that moment. It was necessary to make a new take where I concentrated myself most of all on the parts missing, to follow and make the 'editing'. "

Jose Peixoto explain that all the recordings were made during the day: " my rhythm is diurne. I like to work in the morning, since it is the part of the day that I like the most, but also because I am obliged... as I take every day my children to the school... I wake up at seven o'clock, seven and a half, a quite inconceivable schedule for everybody touring. Nobody associates music and the musicians nowadays. But it is a fact that during the night my outcome is very inferior, I am tired, full of sleep... " We do not know what the other Madredeus think about that, in front of the perspective of Jose Peixoto snoring in full concert. It is that the guitarist " prefers to play in the morning ". The word to the promoters.
At least Marco Franco, main partner of the guitarist in this recent project, acceded in satisfying this desire, during the recording of " O Que me Diz o Espelho de Água ". With him, says Peixoto, " some parts had been enriched with the color of the contrabass ". It also had " a necessity of sharing" much stronger than in previous occasions.

Beyond music, we must underline in "O Que me Diz o Espelho de Água " the great attention in the design of the digipak, with the beautiful photos by Alexander Koch - " the workmanship starts in the composition of music, passes through the process of the composition and through quality of the recording and finishes in the design of the cover" - and the evocative power of the titles, in the tradition of two other musicians gotten passionate for silence, as Benjamin Lew and Harold Budd: "O que não se vê", "Que sente uma nuvem sozinha no céu?", "Outra luz diferente".
A different light illuminating the path of the guitarist? " I feel that I am near to something that I cannot describe, that my language is more mature and controlled, in the meaning of being much well directed, and that I am now able to handle better my ideas. I still do not see the goal. I do not know where is the goal, if it exists. "
Wise words, full of serenity, admirable for being pronounced by somebody whose commitments with Madredeus compel to the whirl of the trips, the hotels and the concerts, up to late night. He seems to lack the time but Jose Peixoto invents it: "We have more available hours than we can expect, during the trips, for example. In the hotels, in the dressing-rooms, when you are waiting to make the sound check, and as I have this diurne discipline, I always advantage the mornings or bits of the afternoon to compose. The opening theme of the album for example, " O que não se vê ", "was composed during the period of the Roland Garros, during the women tournament. I looked to the television without sound to see the athletes, the ball here, ball there, the pauses, the service..., even if the theme is not properly the soudtrack of a tennis match" (laughs).
About the end of this year, Jose Peixoto and Marco Franco think to leave for the road "to make a thing with feet and head " with live music of "O Que me Diz o Espelho de Água ". Preferrably during the morning.

José Peixoto fala do seu terceiro álbum a solo

Manhã cedo. Nas horas claras do dia em que o próprio silêncio ainda não acordou. O tempo certo para José Peixoto tocar os reflexos desta luz nas cordas da sua guitarra. É o que ele nos diz, e o que o espelho lhe diz no novo álbum "O Que me Diz o Espelho de Água". Um "puzzle" de cristais gravado numa igreja.

Choveu durante todo o tempo em que conversámos com José Peixoto, de tarde, no bar do Centro Cultural de Belém, a propósito do lançamento do seu novo álbum, "O Que me Diz o Espelho de Água". Pareceu adequado, atendendo ao elemento líquido citado no título. Uma tarde mais escura do que a música do guitarrista dos Madredeus que não impediu as palavras de, como as notas do disco, correrem na direcção certa.
"O Que me Diz o Espelho de Água" é o terceiro álbum a solo de José Peixoto, guitarrista dos Madredeus, depois de "As Vozes dos Passos" e "A Vida de Um Dia". E o que diz o espelho de água a José Peixoto? "Diz muito com o seu silêncio. Fala-me da quietude, da ilusão do tempo fixo, da solidez líquida, do espaço infinito contido no seu reflexo e também da fragilidade e da constante procura do repouso que existe no mistério da sua alma. Também me seduz pela certeza da sua vida escondida", responde o músico.
De facto, também nós olhámos e vimos mais ou menos a mesma coisa. Por isso, nada mais natural que conversar com José Peixoto, confrontando-o com os reflexos do seu próprio trabalho.
Ao ver-se ao espelho da alma, José Peixoto compõe unicamente com base na intuição. "Sem esboço nenhum nem qualquer ideia pré-determinada." "É como se estivesse a montar um 'puzzle'", diz. "Há uma altura em que se tem uma ideia global da forma, embora ainda não se tenham as peças todas, é preciso encaixá-las, encontrar as notas certas." O "puzzle" de "O Que me Diz o Espelho de Água" tem dez peças, algumas das quais com a participação do contrabaixista Mário Franco e do percussionista Rui Júnior.
"O Que me Diz o Espelho de Água" foi gravado nos dias 10 e 11 de Novembro do ano passado na Igreja da Cartuxa em Caxias, "durante o dia, com muito bom tempo". "Um local que me proporciona um certo conforto acústico e uma atmosfera de recolhimento", diz o músico, que, mesmo assim, se viu forçado a enfrentar algumas contrariedades durante as sessões de gravação. "Houve interrupções motivadas por barulhos exteriores." Seria terrível, presumimos, se tal acontecesse precisamente num take mais inspirado em que tudo correu bem. Pois foi mesmo isso que aconteceu durante a captação do tema "A memória contempla o reflexo". "A igreja fica ao pé de um colégio e numa tarde saiu de lá uma excursão com miúdos. Esteve uma camioneta parada com o motor a trabalhar, mesmo em frente à igreja, com os miúdos a fazer toda aquela algazarra normal nestas circunstâncias. Ficámos sujeitos a uma assobiadela, a um grito. O pior é que o take estava bom até esse ponto. Foi preciso fazer um novo take em que me concentrei sobretudo na parte que faltava, para a seguir fazer o 'editing'."
José Peixoto faz questão de explicar que todas as gravações tiveram lugar durante o dia: "O meu ritmo é diurno. Gosto de trabalhar de manhã, é a parte do dia de que gosto mais, mas também porque sou obrigado... como levo todos os dias os meus filhos para a escola... Levanto-me às sete, sete e meia, um horário um bocado inconcebível para quem está de fora. Ninguém associa a música e os músicos a estas horas. Mas é um facto que à noite o meu rendimento é muito inferior, já estou cansado, cheio de sono..."
Não sabemos o que pensarão sobre isto os restantes Madredeus, perante a perspectiva de um José Peixoto a ressonar em pleno concerto. É que o guitarrista "preferia tocar de manhã". Têm a palavra os promotores.
Pelo menos Marco Franco, principal parceiro do guitarrista neste seu mais recente projecto, acedeu em satisfazer este desejo, nas gravações de "O Que me Diz o Espelho de Água". Com ele, diz Peixoto, "algumas peças ficaram enriquecidas com a cor do contrabaixo". Houve também "uma necessidade de partilha" mais forte do que em anteriores ocasiões.
Além da música, destacam-se em "O Que me Diz o Espelho de Água" o extremo cuidado posto na apresentação do digipak, com as belíssimas fotos de Alexander Koch - "a obra começa na composição da música, passa pelo processo da gravação e da qualidade da captação de som e termina no grafismo da capa" - e o poder evocativo dos títulos, na tradição de outros dois músicos apaixonados pelo silêncio, como Benjamin Lew e Harold Budd: "O que não se vê", "Que sente uma nuvem sozinha no céu?", "Outra luz diferente".
Uma luz diferente da que antes iluminava os passos do guitarrista? "Sinto que estou mais próximo de qualquer coisa que também não sei definir muito bem o que é, que a minha linguagem está mais amadurecida e controlada, no sentido de mais bem dirigida, e que estou a manusear melhor as minhas ideias. Ainda não vi a meta. Não sei onde está a meta, se é que existe."
Palavras sábias, repletas de serenidade, admiráveis por serem proferidas por alguém cujos compromissos com os Madredeus obrigam ao rodopio das viagens, dos hotéis e dos concertos, ainda por cima à noite. Parece faltar o tempo mas José Peixoto inventa-o: "Há mais horas disponíveis do que se pensa, durante as viagens, por exemplo. Nos hotéis, nos camarins, quando se está à espera de fazer o ensaio de som, como tenho esta disciplina diurna, aproveito sempre as manhãs ou bocados da tarde para compor." O tema de abertura do álbum por exemplo, "O que não se vê", "foi composto na altura do torneio de ténis de Roland Garros, o torneio feminino. Entretinha-me com a televisão sem som a ver as tenistas, aquela tensão bola cá, bola lá, as falhas, o serviço..., embora o tema não seja propriamente a banda sonora de um jogo de ténis" (risos).
No final deste ano, José Peixoto e Marco Franco pensam partir para a estrada para "fazer uma coisa com pés e cabeça" com a música ao vivo de "O Que me Diz o Espelho de Água". De preferência de manhã.
