Without Words... Without Ears

I walk, just a few before the rain starts. In the wagon of the subway, I sing; only with my lips... No one can hear me, anyway some people look at me. Just a picture: a boy who sings with me, I see him and I almost can't believe it; he's not listening the music I am, he's not even listening any music, but he sings, without voice as well. Some other people watch, I don't sing any more. Somebody by my side is trying to see what I'm writing... I cover my notebook and sigh. The world is strange, really strange.

That complicity sensation, I feel satisfaction about that kind of company in lonely world; that "singing without voice" and know you have been listened. The image of Babel comes to my mind: the whole world divided by languages, by different ways of thinking, anyone understands the other or even try. Suddenly it rains a lot, all that water falling over my head, which swaddles my eyes, become memories, sensations... How many things I have lived along this two years!!!; two years of smiles, of weeping, of love: two years of being close to all those things which makes me feel full, two years in which the same Portuguese singing followed me, gave me light, dried my tears, and gave me more to cry about... more to laugh for, and more to love; words that I wanted to say by myself and have been said in other language, in the one which only the spirit controls. Rain which fills myself of memories with the taste of salt, of a living tide, fills my ideas with blood. Babel?, it seems that a new time comes, one in which language doesn't matters, it doesn't have value compared with the one of the inside, of the musical vibration of the rain, of a single wish... The picture of Teresa, singing with her little hands, comes to me ... singing yes... without voice, and it's just that the same singing she sang before, with her beautiful voice, she says it too with that magic of knowing that her figure and her manners fills the place of words and much more. Excitement invades me, I feel satisfied about feeling myself in company of others in this world, understood and solidary. This is to me the root of this singing, a singing of hope, a true universal language in which accents or loosed phrases don't matter, no grammar... the language of feelings... a singing of hope: an oxalá which changes my rain into a hope for the future, a singing regulated by a wish. I repeat again and again the things I wish, thinking they can easily become true. I hope all those things I dream, my wishes fall down over me, slowly. I hope the time continue existing... so we can continue having hope. But, what hoping is greater than knowing that you are not alone in this world?

One singing, one same voice and many languages, many countries, many personal universes, many ways of saying it: a unique vision of the sense of life: Madredeus. Memories regulated by a guitar, hopes, dreams and many emotions joined to each other. Years have passed since I started to feel the company; years made of hope for the fields I haven't seen, of dreaming of beautiful seas and of listening the transparent fatherland, far away... Frothy, galloping and salty, that human fatherland which always calls us and makes us come, as much as peace, and the memories to which we want to return, as the love itself... and I still walk through ways, the same ways full of shadows, of dark and moisty richness, of lark's delicate flight, of joy and certain things... uncertain. But the sadness follows me over all these things, the probability of melancholy, Alfama yes, which follows me... and I don't want to get lost, I don't want to stay drooping blood of repentance, I don't want to get distract on my way, I don't want to loose a second of this history, of this intense life and of the art of living it. Living is an art, and you have to make it well, you have to give everything, and "to leave your life in it", so that you can say you lived. Madredeus made it, they have filled all those holes in our hearts, they have become the perfect frame of our lives, of our histories, of our missfindings, and of our loves... they have been the word which can't be said with words, the tear which we couldn't cry anymore and the singing which is heard inside the passionate souls. They gave name to the art of joining the world together by the way of a feeling, which name hasn't been invented... Madredeus changed the feelings into life, they gave sense to the melody, they gave life to the life of all us; to the Aprils and all those beautiful things which shines more since two years ago... Because I meet the world two years ago, and two years ago I was born, on the chords of Guitarra and since then, every feeling is life and every dawn is hope and every taste tastes me like this love that you know yours. I haven't loose them and I found myself there, playing, crying, suffering, in one word: living, with the art by itself which communicates to us the passion of what they know to do. I would like to ask many things, many dreams, but to tell a dream is forbidden, that's why this love for their art will be forever kept inside me... Now I understand that probably the music the guy was singing, wasn't a music which can be heard with the ear, but with the soul, and together we sang a singing which calls... in Portuguese.
