Madredeus and Gal Costa

The temperature remains about the 28 degrees and Ipanema has now a great attraction for the night. In a few minutes the portuguese group Madredeus and the singer Gal Costa will play on a stage built on the beach.
"The brasilian music is much more rhytmical and sensual. When we come there I always say that we are visitors - says Carlos Trindade, keyboard player of Madredeus - and more than that, the portuguese of Brasil is much open. I think that the fusion of our two countries is not so generalized. In Europe we feel in our home." Without any doubt, when the group appears on stage invited by Gal Costa, the public show the contrary.
The ensemble conducted by Teresa Salgueiro and Pedro Ayres born in Lisbon, in 1986, with an original proposal "Madredeus holds the fado, music of the cities of Portugal, of Spain and classical music. These elements are in the guitars, in the voice of Teresa and in the keyboards" says Carlos.
Since 1987, with the CD "Os Dias da Madredeus" the group was known in Portugal and in some countries of Europe. Since the album "Ainda" which is part of the soundtrack of "Lisbon Story" of Wim Wenders they started to be the most successful portuguese group abroad.
"It started to be a cult group, followed by students and intellectuals. While our success in Portugal arouse we started our international career. And it is evident that your success abroad helps your success at home.
The most recent CD "Antologia", a summary of the career of the group which doesn't symbolize the end of a chapter and the starting of another will be edited in almost 40 countries and will serve to spread the music of Madredeus even more. Maybe the start of a new cycle had been "O Paraiso" (1997), the last studio album, after the departure of two members of the group, which impose a slight esthetic change.
The leader Pedro Ayres explains "When Gabriel Gomes and Francisco Ribeiro departed we didn't think about making a clone of the previous group. We had to make new songs. But I think that "O Paraiso" continues the promise of the group and I am happy of the result of the new album"
Ayres is talking about "Movimento", an already recorded album which will be released in the first months of 2001. Many of the new songs will be presented to the argentinian public in the next Monday in the Rex Theater
- How is Movimento?
Pedro Ayres - It is much more agile, the compositions are unexpected, but continues to accompany the figure of Teresa. The difficult thing is to avoid to repeat the same paths and to make songs on the same rhythms. What is repeated is the quest for originality and for sensitivity through the figure of actress... of the singer
- Actress?
P.A. - Because it is a representation. It is a booklet for the songs of a show. The image of Teresa has a determined role.
Trindade - The group write for the voice of Teresa inside the context of Madredeus. Pedro is the main author of the songs, but we all work on a composition which is unified in the voice of the singer.
- Ayres, in an interview to a journal of Rio de Janeiro, said that the mission of the group was to go out of Portugal. Is this really the main objective?
P.A. - I didn't said just this. For a certain period our group has been for our Portugal, and we played in churches and castels. This created a growing interest abroad. At a certain moment we had to decide if the group should start to have a new horizon or to continue holding the same position. In general few are the artists going out of their country. In portugal there are fado artists which do that regularly, just as some argentinian tango artists. Apart of Madredeus, the most known artists of Portugal are Dulce Pontes, Misia and Maria Joao. It is curious that all of them are women. Maybe it is because of the myth of Amália Rodrigues.
- A new substitute for Amália is searched?
Trindade - The death of Amália (1999) was very dramatic and the people want to fill that emptyness. Amália was a national icon. It was the best singer but she was also very carismatic. And before her it was not easy for a girl to sing fado
- Do you feel like representatives of Portugal abroad?
P.A. - The question is a bit silly. The music is not of Portugal. Many times they talk about ambassadors and I want to take a distance from this idea. We talk about our country and we have its roots. But the ambassadors make something else. In Portugal Madredeus is an independent group which is temptating a original quest. For this reason we should distinguish between responsibility and love.
